Former Senator and actor Fred Thompson has all but "officially" announced he will be seeking the GOP nomination for President.Politician-turned-actor Fred Thompson has been coy with audiences as he flirts with a bid for the Republican presidential nomination.
In an interview with USA TODAY, however, the former Tennessee senator not only makes it clear that he plans to run, he describes how he aims to do it. He's planning a campaign that will use blogs, video posts and other Internet innovations to reach voters repelled by politics-as-usual in both parties.
"I can't remember exactly the point that I said, 'I'm going to do this,' " Thompson says, his 6-foot, 6-inch frame sprawled comfortably across a couch in a hotel suite. "But when I did, the thing that occurred to me: 'I'm going to tell people that I am thinking about it and see what kind of reaction I get to it.' "To say the least, the reaction has been good amongst both the conservative base and Congressional politicians (taking on Michael Moore always helps).
So now, after resigning from 'Law and Order', Thompson has more openly set his campaign in motion. Here's a summary of his past political positions. He's already generated preemptive strikes from the left who are seeking to liken to him to Wesley Clark in '04. Not really.
OK, if you're sated, please discuss.
Fred thinks he can "act" his way into the nomination by pretending he is Reagan? Or is it Branch? Who knows, who cares. He lacks the executive experience to be Commander in Chief. Period. He is a joke.
However, I would like to know more about the supposed illigitimate child he fathered with another mans wife. Actually, thats all I really care to hear. It for more interesting than him following the lead of the 10 candidates. Because God and everyone else knows, he brings nothing new to the field. As far as I am concerned he can go slither back into obscurity.
Posted by: Jim Robinson at May 31, 2007 3:31 PMWow, so Jim Robinson isn't voting for him. I'm so glad to know that.
Despite Jim's protestations to the contrary he's got the resume to be an excellent President. He's got boatloads more than the Connecticut Cowboy screwing up the office right now:
* Senator, United States Senate, 1994-2003
* Member, Tennessee Appellate Court Nominating Commission, 1985-1987
* Special Counsel, Senate Intelligence Committee, 1982
* Special Counsel, Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, 1980-1981
* Committee Member, Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities ("Watergate Committee"), 1973-1974
* Assistant U.S. Attorney, 1969-1972
"I would like to know more about the supposed illigitimate child he fathered with another mans wife."
Catch up, friend. Fifteen years ago, Bill and Hillary said that it was not permitted to ask such questions and the main stream media agreed.
Steeee-rike one.
Posted by: SusanD at May 31, 2007 9:36 PM Fred looks great on paper and in theory. But can he live up to conservatives' high expectations? My bet's still on Romney.
As for the illegitimate kid, if he intends to play the family values card (particularly with voters turned off by Guiliani's personal life), he's got some 'splainin' to do. Rudy, Hillary, etc., have had experience dealing with those issues.
Jim, if that's the best you've got against Thompson, he should do OK.
If you have evidence post it.
Otherwise, you're no different than the low-lifes who spread rumors during the South Carolina primary that John McCain had fathered in illegitimate black child when he had in fact adopted a Bangladeshi girl.
There a vicious backlash against Thompson from liberals that you don't see against many of the other Republican. It leaves little doubt that the Democrats are already afraid of the guy.
I don't know if he will win the GOP primary, but he is already a top tier contender and he hasn't begun his campaign yet.
Posted by: Anthony at June 1, 2007 8:31 AMIf he catches on he will destroy Romney. He basically has Romney's positions but has held them all his life, not just 6 months ago like the varmint hunter. This is actually good news for Rudy who might have it all locked up if he can win the Feb. 6 "national primary". With Mel Martinez as VP the Democrats would swallow hard with either the sociopathic Wicked Witch or the son of a black Muslim.
Posted by: Mike at June 1, 2007 8:59 AMHi!
I plan to run for delegate in Rhode Island's Second Congressional District but not yet picked a candidate. It may be Thompson.I don't want to back a candidate yet.
Most personal rumors should be addressed by any of the candidates especially if they are often talked about.Politics will always have some form of gossip but it is best to attack it head on.This includes more than one candidate. When you think of the Thompson post yesterday about it,I thought of Grover Cleveland and he did become President twice!
I am pleased the Rhode Island State GOP may actually change the delegation selection process. It appears with the exception of the the GOP State Chair, and the two National Committee Members from Rhode Island all other delegates will be elected by voters themselves. That is a positive step to correcting problems with the leadership of our last GOP State Chair Patricia Morgan.
I also understand it will not be winner take all delegates and there will be some distribution according to vote totals so multiple candidates may get delegates from Rhode Island. This still has to be approved by the state GOP committee.
Regards,
Scott
Greg, a smart employer goes deeper than the "prior work experience" section of the resume.
What has Thompson accomplished? What is he known for fighting for?
Smart employers look at accomplishments. That's where Rudy stands out above the rest. That's why he has my support.

Thank you, Anthony.
Posted by: SusanD at June 1, 2007 10:17 PMWarbucks,
Those answers are out there if you can get past your laziness long enough to put "Fred Thompson" in a search engine and hit enter.

I feel like Fred Thompson is another one of these "anointed" candidates being foisted on us. His sudden popularity seems utterly bizarre to me. It's like all of a sudden there are all these people saying this guy I never heard of before should be president. He was scoring high in polls before he declared,in fact he still hasn't,has he? So what's driving this push for him?
Strange.
Posted by: free at June 3, 2007 11:58 PMWhat's driving the push is that he's the only conservative running.
Posted by: Greg at June 4, 2007 9:34 AMFred Thompson seems like a Real Republican unlike Some of the current canidates. Flipper Romney, Rudy "Great Homland Security but not Pro Life, John McCain the RINO,
I guess we will just have to see.
Fred Thompson is my pick so far if he jumps into the race
"It's like all of a sudden there are all these people saying this guy I never heard of before should be president. ... So what's driving this push for him?"
Duh. It's the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. They've decided to walk away from the millions they've given Romney and go with this guy.
Why? Sorry, it's not for anyone to question the motives or m.o. of the V.R.W.C.
