And Another One Gone
Carroll Andrew Morse
WPRO's (630 AM) Dan Yorke reported last evening that state Representative Richard Singleton (R - Cumberland) has announced that he is leaving the Republican party. Yorke (as well as a few other sources) say that Representative Singleton will not become a Democrat, but will act as an independent where the organization of the General Assembly is concerned.

GOP doesn't have numbers to affect anything in the legislature with Singleton so losing yet another double agent doesn't make much difference. Addition via subtraction if you ask me. Thought it odd Singleton played deaf mute during the House budget food fights given how Rick loves the limelight and the sound of his own voice. Guess he's been pouting for awhile? Another case of diaper rash gone wild on Smith Hill. I actually feel bad for the RI GOP because we all know how hard it is for them to find good candidates. All too often they end up with these selfish low character free agent types.

Posted by: rhody at September 7, 2007 12:49 PMLook on the bright side ... with fewer GOP House members, we'll have more resources to allocate to the remaining 12. ;)

Posted by: Scott Bill Hirst at September 7, 2007 4:27 PMJust learned of this here.I do not know him and I have been around GOP circles awhile. How much of a player was he really in the GOP at least state wide?I certainly heard of him but never got the impression he was a particuliarly a "mover and shaker" in the GOP.
Regards,
Scott
Hi!
Posted by: Scott Bill Hirst at September 7, 2007 4:32 PMFrom a straight historical perspective the RI GOP has not controlled the RI House of Representatives since 1939-41,.They last won control nearly seventy years ago in 1938,.The GOP Speaker was Hugo A.Clason of Providence.
Historically yours,
Scott
I think at this point, the loss of any GOP elected official can be considered at the same time insignificant as well as ruinous.
It's insignificant because the minority caucus had already been as marginalized as a party can be, and it's potentially ruinous because as the 2nd elected Republican to abandon the party since November, eventually there simply won't be a party left.
Whatever the reason, there seems to be a malignancy within the ranks of the GOP, and Singleton's loss should not be brushed aside because he wasn't a "mover and a shaker" within the inner cliques of the RIGOP.
Scott may not have known Singleton as a Republican, but he has been a presence on both talk radio and in the pages of the Providence Journal; not because of his default position in the minority leadership, but because he was making waves with legislation he has sponsored and positions he has taken. That's significant. Singleton, I don't believe is the type to simply sit back and enjoy the crumbs of relevance that's given to GA members. He's the type of guy that works hard and makes news. He's the type of guy that even if you don't agree with all of the time (which I don't) you want in your party.
Posted by: tom at September 7, 2007 5:02 PMIs this really a surprise? It sucks being on a team that has been infiltrated by "former" Trotskyites who now rule the party, and have warped it beyond recognition.
And if this blog is truly a representation of the alternative viewpoint to the RI democratic machine, well, God help us. There are six of you writing here and this blog turns slower than the brain process of a TSA worker at T.F. Green. Maybe bring Dave Talan aboard. At least he'd bring the trekker crowd along. And who doesn't like goofing on nerds?
Anchor Rising? Big deal, suckers. Your ship is sinking.
Posted by: PDM at September 10, 2007 12:46 AMJustin, I demand an explanation. Pursuant to PDM's comment, why did you not disclose that Anchor Rising is a wholly owned subsidiary of and a propaganda tool for the RIGOP??
(Also, when is the next meeting of the Trotskyite sub-committee? That sounds interesting ...)
