... effective September 12, Turn to Ten reports. [H/T Ian Donnis at Not For Nothing.]
The longtime political columnist for The Providence Journal is retiring.M. Charles Bakst is taking a buyout that was recently offered to a number of Journal employees.
For the past 40 years, Bakst has written weekly and Sunday columns for the newspaper. He also served as State House bureau chief.
Charlie will finally have to learn how to manage a food budget without relying on catering tables and zip-loc baggies in his pockets.
Posted by: Greg at August 6, 2008 1:59 PMHooray!
M. Charles Backstabber's liberal drivel is history!
Posted by: Citizen Critic at August 6, 2008 2:00 PMIs it true that the buyout includes all the Lamb Chops he can eat and a place to sleep undetected at the Pawsox games .
Posted by: leprechaun at August 6, 2008 3:11 PMMaybe an illegal alien will steal Charley's identity and charge $20,000 at various buffet restaurants.
In all sincerity,he will not be missed any more than last week's trash pickup.
Bakst's appetite was surpassed only by his ego. Unfortunately, the quality of his columns surpassed neither.
Still, he became a Rhode Island institution by virtue of the position he held. Perhaps the Projo will consider keeping the column, but injecting some fresh blood.
Posted by: Anthony at August 6, 2008 9:48 PMGoodbye forever! He will be sorely missed and I do mean it literally. I can finally take the stake out of my eye that was there to take the focus off Bakst.
Why did he use first initial of his name, followed by middle and last name?
Did he think it would add an aire of importance like M. Night Shyamalan?
Goodbye, so long, enough your end in P-town or wherever you go just please stay away from a phone, typewriter, PDA or any other device where you can document your ignorance for all mankind.
Posted by: Roland at August 7, 2008 12:24 AM Merrill C. may be just the beginning of the star power the ProJo will lose as a result of the buyouts. I wouldn't be surprised to see Bob Kerr leave, either.
The face of the Red Sox coverage could undergo some drastic change - with the shakeups at the Globe and Herald creating opportunities, don't be surprised to see Sean McAdam go, either. Or Jim Donaldson, whose self-righteousness, from where I sit, goes well beyond anything Bakst is guilty of.
Rhody-I never quite got it about sportswriters-you watch the ballgame and that's it.Do we really need someone to explain it?
Posted by: joe bernstein at August 7, 2008 5:01 AMmcb hasnt had ascope in years....for al the time he spent in ri and ploitics, all he could do is right about the rehashed news....

*[new] Nice research, Matt. (0.00 / 0)
Hopefully, some of North Providence's Italian-Americans who tend to
spew right-wing rhetoric will read that piece. Let Mayor Lombardi be
the first.

*[new] The Don's just a thug (3.00 / 1)
He figures he can get away with it because it's a friendly talk
radio audience, and that righty Italian-American Democrats will vouch
for him like they always do.

*[new] Carcieri - is that Italian for "lying sack"? (0.00 / 0)

Sue Carcieri reminds me of Phil Leotardo's wife in "The Sopranos."
She was the one agitating Phil into killing Vito because he was gay,
and Phil did it (probably knowing it wasn't good for business) out of
guilt over his comattas.

*[new] If The Don's serious about budget cutting... (0.00 / 0)
...he ought to lay off all the comattas in state government -

Oh, I kid.

*[new] How soon she forgets (0.00 / 0)
Geraldine, just because you're married to an Italian-American who
doesn't submit his tax returns, that doesn't make you a Mafia
princess. Think about that the next time you open your piehole about
Obama.

*[new] Italian-American machismo? (0.00 / 0)
What makes Italian-Americans so conservative? Notice how virtually
all the Democrats who oppoed Myrth York (even before Carcieri ran)
were Italian-Americans.

*[new] Don Carcieri = Phil Leotardo (0.00 / 0)
Is Don really that mean, or is he just appeasing the missus?

*[new] Think Carcieri lays awake at night... (0.00 / 2)
...wishing he could actually have people killed like his role
models Saddam, Idi Amin and Jean-Claude Duvalier?
I'd throw in Michael Corleone, but that would be politically
incorrect.

An innocent woman and boy should not have to suffer for the
nefarious, thuglike activities of their husband and father.

*[new] Nice of The Don to be so concerned (0.00 / 0)
It only proves the gov no longer works for the people of the state
- just the talk radio crowd. I'm sure his Patriarca impression will go
over well with his peeps.

*[new] Thugging the thug? (4.00 / 1)
Gio trying to blackmail Alves is like Artie Bucco trying to
blackmail Tony Soprano.
Nice boardinghouse reach, Mike, especially since we're dealing with a post about a cantankerous old Jewish guy of sometimes questionable personal habits.
Let me guess...you consider Mario Cuomo a traitor and, in the spirit of this post, you'd love to see him garrotted.
Be careful of pricking your fingers, Mike.
