Both of us being giddy with anticipation prior to the president speech last night, my conversation with the host of the Matt Allen Show was full of sarcasm and laughter, which strikes me as the only appropriate posture to the current situation. Stream by clicking here, or download it.
Oh, by the way, the person who called out "You lie!" causing a very interesting moment in the speech #&151; when the president declared that no illegal immigrants would receive taxpayer-financed healthcare under his plan was Republican South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson. The Associated Press tsks at the "nastiness" of the moment, but if that's the gauge, there were plenty of moments of nastiness in the speech itself.
You bet here's humor in the healthcare debate. Couldn't stop laughing as I listened to President YouLie last night. Kept waiting for the nations TV personality to offer up "a chicken in every pot" promise.
We will get a bill coming out of this embarrassingly incompetent Congress that will greatly diminish and erode the best health care system in the world. A bill whose price tag will throw this economy over the cliff.
The crowd who couldn't run its' own cash for clunkers program will "fix" our healthcare system?
Now that's funny!
The only question left is how long it will take for this American economy to collapse. The country can't pay its' bills without Chinese loans. States are broke. Cities are broke. Towns are broke. The nations TV personality and his Congressional minions are printing money and spending like never before.
The complete collapse is coming!
Simply a question of when.
This reminded me of the partisan response to the GWB shoe throwing incident where one side called for respect and the other side enjoyed the political payoff. Somehow I think you’d react much differently if the parties of the players were different regardless of content or context. But we’ve already had this discussion – you see the value of playing the partisan game. Political events (and discourse) are no longer about substance, civility or anything that could possibly transcend partisanship.
I read Wilson’s apology and it was accurate that his outburst lacked civility and was totally inappropriate (not to mention intellectually dishonest). We can only guess whether the apology was sincere. We can only guess whether he would have done that if the speech were not nationally televised.
How would you react to someone doing that during a speech by the Pope? Would that be worthy of criticizing? Would the religion or denomination of the person matter?
To me, there are some situations when respect and restraint are called for regardless of partisan content – and a Presidential address should be one of those. In my view, it was a deplorable act and it further poisons the already toxic atmosphere in our political culture. You may not like him or agree with him but he is the President of the United States and should be shown respect when addressing the country. But I see that your view of what is and what is not acceptable behavior is all about the political affiliations of those involved.
Gotta have humor ... if only you applied that across party lines.
