Russell J. Moore's story in Tuesday's Warwick Beacon about State Representative Joseph Trillo's almost final departure from the Governor's race contains a number of interesting details.
Trillo said he wasn’t prepared to make an endorsement in the race just yet, despite the fact that East Greenwich businessman Rory Smith has jumped head first into the race.“I’ve heard a lot of good things about Smith, but it’s still too early for me to make up my mind at this point,” said Trillo.
Trillo criticized Providence Mayor David Cicilline and Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts, both of which he said raised money under the guise of running for governor only to pull out of the race.“They should have to give back their donations,” said Trillo.
Smith…found time to issue a press release saying that he’s hired professional campaign consultants and a national polling firm. The Norway Hill Consulting Firm, a Massachusetts-based firm led by David Carney, the political director under George H. W. Bush. Smith also hired The Tarrance Group as his pollsters.Dave Sackett, who will serve as Smith’s lead pollster, said in a press release, “people are looking for new ideas and new ways to approach the problems that we face. As someone who isn’t beholden to the special interests, Rory will bring a fresh perspective to state government.”
First smart move Trillo's made in a long time.
Posted by: George at November 12, 2009 11:30 AMHi!
While it will not necessarily preclude my support, if they don't posssess GOP background, but if I am on the nominating committee of the state GOP, I do expect to explore EVERY candidates Republican credentials.
I do not want the Rhode Island GOP USED.
Party building is a SERIOUS expectation for any Governor although NOT officially part of their job description.

Well, at least I'm familiar with his stance on useless legislation in desperate times.

Posted by: mangeek at November 12, 2009 12:23 PMWhile his stance on certain issues is in line with my stance I still am leaning towards Caprio but it will be an interesting race none the less.
Posted by: Numo at November 12, 2009 1:52 PMThe only hope left for this state is to get Stephen Laffey to reconsider and jump into this race. If we elect Mr. Unionize Daycare Workers (see RI Senate Vote) Caprio, we will ruin this state, Lynch is even worse, and we've seen just how disastrous it is to elect a businessman from East Greenwich with zero political experience!
Laffey has a plan, and many plans in fact to save our state. Ever read the op/ed section of the Journal? I call on each and everyone of us who cares about this state to follow my post with your own draft Laffey message? If enough of us weigh in maybe he will run to save our state?
