That Which You Cannot Believe
Justin Katz
Frankly, I believe a newspaper should have the right to take this sort of action, but I think it sufficiently outrageous that advertisers and readers should react negatively:
Larry Grard, 58, of Winslow covered the November election for Maine Today, the vote in which Maine citizens rejected homosexual "marriage." Subsequently, he received a press release at work from a homosexual activist which read: "We will not allow the lies and hate – the foundation on which our opponents build their campaign --- to break our spirits." Being a devout Catholic, Grard was offended by the release's blanket reference to opponents of same-sex marriage.
So, using his private email accounte, Grard wrote back:
Who are the hateful, venom-spewing ones? Hint: Not the yes on 1 crowd. You hateful people have been spreading nothing but vitriol since this campaign began. Good riddance!
Subsequently, the long-time employee and his cooking-columnist wife lost their jobs with the paper. Message sent, I guess.

People have lost jobs at newspapers for less than that. Journalists have paid with their jobs and learned painfully that advertisers call the shots - witness what's happening at the ProJo's parent paper in Dallas, where salespeople are making key editorial decisions.
Posted by: rhody at December 12, 2009 7:39 PMDude should've expressed those views verbally, not in writing. Any ProJo reporter would be fired if they got into it via e-mail with you in that tone.
Pretty soon this place will be like Sweden.Apparently if you question anything about the normalcy of homosexuality, you can be charged with a hate crime.
Posted by: joe bernstein at December 12, 2009 8:53 PMThis is going to backfire one day.The constant in-your-face attitude is doing homosexuals more harm than good, and I'm sure there are some who see that is true.A small minority can't always bend the majority to its will.
I'm not that interested in the whole subject;just making an observation.
Joe B is right. pretty soon if you question gun rights, or gay rights you COULD be charged with a hate crime.
Why my last comments were erased by the good folks at, Anchor Rising, is another question ?
Happy Holidays to All

Joe are you talking about the
"Small Minority" of
Asians 3%
Jews 1%
Mormons .01%
What SMALL MINORITY??
The re-thugs tell us we are all Americans Black, White,Yellow, Straigth or Gay
All equal rights groups eventually outlive their usefulness and become obnoxious caricatures of themselves because of the inherent profitability and power that comes with them. In many ways, their successes and longevity are their own worst enemies in the end.
The feminists turned into the feminazis, MLK turned into Al Sharpton, and so it will be with the gay rights movement as well. I support truly equal treatment for everyone (not progressive affirmative action discrimination, which is socially and economically destructive and morally abhorrent), as well as gay marriage, but I simply accept the fact that the gay movement will turn into a bunch of political hypersensitive bullies over time, if it hasn't happened already. That's just the nature of the thing.
Posted by: Dan at December 13, 2009 12:33 AMGay Guy-I'm telling you what I see in Maine,California, and every other place where same sex marriage has come up for a vote-it isn't getting the vote.
Posted by: joe bernstein at December 13, 2009 12:38 AMIt can be legislated, but legislators then have to decide if they want to be voted out over it.
The courts can decide in some cases, and maybe that's how it will play out.
All I can tell you is that the aggressive stance of the homosexual activists is not accomplishing what they hope it will.
Steve-I don't think any of the groups you mentioned have a snowball's chance in hell of remaking the country to their liking-they all have to make compromises. The majority has made compromises too.
I don't see a correlation between ethnic/racial/religious groups and sexual orientation in any event.
Typical response from those who allegedly want everyone to have an open mind and accept those who are different-get rid of those who don't agree. I have found those who speak loudest about accepting people who are different are usually the most oppressive.
