"admitting the obvious: The economy needs the state to get out of the way. That’s the big idea. That’s the organizing principle."
At the continued risk of exposing my Southern, red neck, roots, here is my objection to the government directing the economy "If you are holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail"
I was just watching the "Imported from Detroit" commercials on Youtube, I noticed a posted comment "FDR and the unions created the middle class". I overheard a Democratic diatribe on the radio today, I forget the Presidents listed but it was pretty much as follows "President X "created" 18 million jobs, President Y "created" 13 million jobs". etc. I wonder how many accept this? I am not a Starbucks person, so I stopped at a Dunkin Donuts around Noon. I was engaged in conversation by a woman who claimed to be a call girl, she rattled off a stream of Democratic shibboleths. She even thought Ryan was the one who said the body has natural defenses against rape. I thought she was at least half intelligent and was surprised she couldn't see the underlying fallacies. Presidents don't "create" squat, the times "create" the President. However, they do have the "bully pulpit" and can use that effectively, or not.
