Democratic First District Congressional Candidate William Lynch, who as Chairman of the State Democratic Party successfully discouraged his party’s gubernatorial candidates from appearing at a Rhode Island Voter Coalition candidates forum in January, has scheduled his own appearance at a “Drinking Liberally” public forum to be held on February 24 (h/t Meg Grady).
According to Steve Wright of the RIVC, Mr. Lynch has yet to respond to the Voter Coalition’s invitation to attend their February forum (scheduled for the same evening as the Drinking Liberally event). Republican John Robitaille and independent Lincoln Chafee, candidates for governor, are scheduled to appear at the RIVC forum; Democratic gubernatorial candidate Frank Caprio and Congressional candiate David Cicilline declined the RIVC invitation, citing scheduling conflicts.
In announcing his candidacy, William Lynch said that it was necessary to “come together and govern from the middle”. It appears that to him, governing from the middle means doing issue-oriented public interaction in front of ideologically progressive groups, while completely ignoring other citizen groups. It makes you wonder where exactly Mr. Lynch thinks the middle is.
Why has John Robitaille refused to attend any of the Drinking Liberally events? Does he think he can win this election with votes from the “Radical Right” folks only? Would it be a kiss of death if Robitaille attended a lefty event?
Why should he?The left has nothing to offer.
I went to about three of those events-but I’m not interested in running for office.
Robitaille has enough trouble getting conservatives to learn his name,without wasting his time with the radical fringe of Rhode Island.
Frankly,I don’t see what he has going for him.
Caprio is a better choice.

I’m guessing that he may be thinking he can win this election by appealing to independents who more than outnumber Democrats and/or Republicans in this state.

Coud not open the RIVC link. It was my understanding that Steve Wright is a far right wing tea party nut and not just a concerned citizen. Why would any of these candidates want to have anything to do with a group of a dozen or so of these right wing paranoids.
This really is hilarious.
Lynch is eschewing a non-partisan event (and encouraged other candidates to do so as well) but is attending a partisan one. Yet in his announcement, he said
So the partisan politics of Washington are not providing solutions. But the partisan politics of Rhode Island will provide solutions …?
Phil, I think your understanding is wrong, but there is one way for you to know, and that is to attend the forum and see for yourself.

It amazes me that some people lack the mental capacity to listen to all sides and then make an informed educated decision. Think for yourself Please and come to an event and see. You may call me anything you like but at least this way it will be your own thoughts not someone else’s

I would respectfully suggest that your perception has been formed by the kind of people that place David Cicilline on lists of conservative Rhode Islanders and who believe that anything less-fringe than unwavering support for guild-socialism merits blacklisting, for holding supposedly “right-wing” views.
