Really, watch the whole thing (7+ minutes). Yes, it’s much easier to do with a “new” city (4 others have followed the Shady Springs model). But older cities can do the same thing. The difficulty is with selling the change. Especially to the workers.

A few thoughts, first: “Government should not do anything that can be found in the Yellow Pages”. I have wondered why my city has a “Forestry Department”.
Second, people in the South are accustomed to “living in the county”. They expect less “city services”. The leap is not so great. Still, the solution is both charming and elegant.
Noticed a few other things. Although there are schools in Atlanta to lose your accent, I expect most residents of Atlanta are new to the South. Mr. Porter has a detectable accent. Mayor Gallando seems to have adopted localisms, such as “fixin to”. No red dirt in the street paving scenes.
White Flight 2011. Fulton County is 50% African American. Sandy Springs? 10%? Do the math. Great story for the New America.
A city offers great services at low cost through responsible financial planning and David S finds a way to call them all racists for it. Progressives are such a sad group of people.
Dan, I thought David was just saying that African-Americans are bad with money and bad urban planners and simply offering his own racist opinion.

I hear how many RI public safety workers catch slack for not living in the town they work, suggesting they make ao much money that thy move out… I’m guessing no one gives a crap that the majority of Sandy Springs Pd an Fd lve outside city limits because they can’t afford it…
Also, what you get when you pay your people pennies like Sandy Springs is a high attrition rate. They don’t mention how many cops and firefighters they lose annually that flee to pd and FF jobs with better pay an benefits in surrounding areas buta quick google search shows it’s a significant number. Sandy Springs pays thousands for these people go to academies and be outfitted only to see them flee for better paying jobs…
Seems not everything is as peachy as it seems in the peach state.
Savannah PD is another great example of what you get when you under compensate your workers. I have a close friend who is a former SPD officer who left after 4 years since he got no raises and his co workers hid behind buildings or in Savannah Market eating cheetos for 8hrs a day. YouTube savannah pd to see their stellar police work…
I thought it important to add:
Surely there are instances of well paid RI police snoozing or even selling drugs as in the case of Prov PD. While these are unacceptable, here they are an exception to the norm as most officers are worth every penny. The difference is down south these types are activities are routine, they are the norm. I saw it with my own eyes when I visited. We visited many of his former coworkers, 2 were “on duty” at home. One was eating cheetos behind the counter at savannah market and another one hungout in our hotel room for atleast 3hrs while on patrol. It really was amazing. Out of my friends recruit class of 20
officers only 3 remain on the job. Everyone else
quit. He came back home in hopes of getting on what he calls ” a real police dept” where he won’t get paid recruit pay for 4 years…

I’m sure no one cares who mows the lawn, when it comes to public safety I saw right through the bs.

Before we do any math, let’s add in the average income in Sandy Springs. And remember there are not zero blacks.
All my math tells me is that Sandy Springs is home to relatively high earners.
Too bad they picked Sandy Springs, it sounds so “new”. Sort of like living in a subdivision with names like Gunstock Road.
