It Would Be Wonderfully Amusing, If It Were Not So Completely Irritating & Insulting

I received a fund-raising letter last week from Senator Lincoln Chafee. Here is the paragraph to which my response vacillated between irritation and utter amusement at its words and tone:

My opponent in the Republican primary, Stephen Laffey, is preparing to run a negative campaign because the only way he can win is to attack me. You see, his divisive, confrontational approach has led to acrimony and costly law suits, but little in real results for the City of Cranston. He can’t run on his record so he’s going to attack mine.

Tone deaf. Chafee apparently doesn’t understand that Laffey need not attack him. All Laffey has to do is speak up about what he believes in and the stark contrast with Chafee cannot be missed. Simply pathetic.
Here is to voting for change.

Sorry Donald but there is actualy much truth in the Chafee quote you’ve highlighted.
Laffey’s record in Cranston is not that of a conservative mayor.
Multiple tax hikes, illegal alien ID cards, hidden traffic cameras, etc.
The great irony is how the Democratic party and unions are planning to use Laffey to get rid of Chafee and put that Senate seat back in Democratic party hands.

Tim,
You Chafee bumpkins remind me of “Slick Willy” with your knavish comments.
This one is particularly amusing – “…but little in real results for the City of Cranston.” Oh yeah, Tim, Laffey engineered the fastest municipal turnaround in history, but you Chafee lightweights wouldn’t know what that means. By the way, Tim, how many of those lavish crossing guard contracts did Chafee sign when he was mayor by the way? Hmmm.
Start rounding out the resume Tim, for you will soon be seeking new employment.

Jim, your childish comments don’t further the Laffey cause at all.
If anything it merely highlights a arrogant and paranoid streak with seems to permeate the Laffey camp.
Though I’m an unaffiliated voter I vote Republican 99% of the time, I’ve never met Linc Chafee and I have no need to change my resume but thanks for your concern. lol
Come to think of it I’m exactly the type of voter Steve Laffey will desperately need in November after the Democrats and unions use Laffey to knock Chafee out of the race.
Steve Laffey will never get my vote.
Laffey is simply too disingenuous in a very paranoid and sneaky way to make him an attractive candidate for me.
I’ll probably write in a candidate because there is no way Sheldon Whitehouse would ever get my vote for anything.
By the way Jim, you did not refute anything I said in my response to Donald.
That’s because you can’t.
Anyone can balance the books by raising taxes.
Anyone!

Tim has been silent for about a month, but he is back with the same old three issues : Cranston property taxes, aliens and cameras. In one month, haven’t you gotten better talking points than these. Here are three things that Republicans actually do care about and will cost Chafee the primary election: Chafee voting no on tax cuts, voting no on the war, and voting no on Alito.
By the way, Laffey didn’t raise taxes last year, got 20% co-share and health savings accounts from the city workers, fired the crossing guards, and saved the city $3 milliion from the schools by going to court. Your guy Chafee brings people together ie the special intersts meet taxpayers’ wallets.
You know what is so funny about the direct mail piece by Chafee, everybody knows what Chafee said really describes Chafee himself-he has no record so he attacks Laffey. He just accuses Laffey of doing what he is actually guilty of. Hmm, just like when the Chafee people said in the past that Laffey would run as independent when it appears that Chafee will end up running as in independent because he can’t win a Republican Primary. You Chafee guys are first class fools…even dumber than Lamont. Keep it coming.

Thank you Fred Sanford.
I rest my case!! lol
PS – a little advice to all you rocket scientists. Best to start looking at the big picture. Linc Chafee is the least of your worries.

Tim:
The 1% of the time that you do not vote Republican must have been the time you voted for Chafee. If it is arguments refuting your tired and old talking points about Laffey that you seek, try reading the last 30 days of any Laffey post on this blog.., It’s over.
By the way, welcome back, you must be sitting in James’ chair at work

Well, that was all very interesting.
I also received the same fundraising letter from Senator Chafee (actually several copies of the same one — those poor trees!). I wondered to myself “who the heck wrote this drivel?” Plainly, it wasn’t written by a Rhode Islander, or by someone with a strong connection with political reality (I’m guessing the NRSC).
Point after point, it all seemed so more applicable to Sen. Chafee himself — “can’t run on his record” — “negative campaigning” — “little in real results.” As for “costly lawsuits” — er, yup, those which the mayor WON, and which saved the city millions of dollars. As for “divisive,” yeah, that’s what happens when you actually stand up for something! Someone else might not like it!
Donald, I’m wondering if there might be a stronger adjective to use to describe this than “pathetic,” but for right now, I’ll agree with your description.
PS Yes, I plan to give to the Chafee for Senate campaign — in Polish Zlotys!

Tim,
You use the same argument that every lamebrained political coward uses – anyone could have raised taxes. So why didn’t they, Tim? I’ll tell you why – they had no balls to do what had to be done. They were more concerned about winning elections than doing the right thing. They were pandering for votes while driving the city into the ground. Like Avedesian and Cicciline and CHAFEE, they signed the same outrageous contracts that Laffey had the balls to stand up and say “no more”.
You take your boy Chafee and what he has done in his life and compare it to Laffey and what he has doone in his and there is no comparison.
Tim, how can you really think that no real results were gotten under Laffey.
Furthermore, how do you explain the fact that after raising the taxes in Cranston, Laffey won re-election by a 2 to 1 margin.
The citizens of Cranston obviously think that Laffey got results.
Tim, you really are better off saying nothing because you sound like a fool.
