RE: Who’s Making Way for Buddy? Nobody

According to 7to7, who got this from WPRO Station Manager Paul Giammarco:

Program Director Paul Giammarco said the details of the station’s line-up of talk show hosts will be announced later. Giammarco said that the station’s four existing hosts, St.Pierre, John DePetro, Rush Limbaugh and Dan Yorke, will all remain at the station.
“Ron, John, Rush and Dan are important members of our station’s line-up,” he said. “Each provides the public with their unique perspectives on local, regional and national issues, and the forum for the public to engage, be entertained and be informed.”
“Right now,” Giammarco said, “everyone is going to be here.”

My hunch is that Buddy will team with long-time pal St. Pierre in the mornings. If that’s the case, such a move would also help lessen the tension between Cianci and DePetro during any “cross-over”.

Ron St. Pierre is God if he can manage all that testosterone strutting through his studio over the course of the average workday.
My speculation is that Buddy gets afternoon drive and St Pierre wants to move Yorke to midday (which might explain Danny’s peevishness). I’d want to line up the three of them up across the day and market WPRO as the LOCAL talk station (Rush is on his back nine – he’s still a player, but not the culture-moving force he once was).
Rush would have more value at HJJ, who could pick him up and then market an all-star conservative lineup (with Hannity and Beck). PRO then picks up Helen Glover as a fill-in – she kicked Dave Barber’s butt in AM last year, and her immigrant-bashing would fit in with PRO’s listnership, too.

” her immigrant-bashing ”
Nice try, Rhody. Possibly a quick ear wax treatment is in order. Helen Glover has never bashed immigrants. She bashs the politicians who encourage undocumented immigrants to come here by refusing to enforce our immigration laws and even offering them social service benefits.
As you raised the subject and appear to disagree with Helen’s views, can you please explain something? Why is every other country in the world permitted to have and enforce a border – and all that entails – but us?

To reiterate. “Undocumented” is the key word, Rhody. Not “immigrant”.

Dear Susan,
Glover is a racist piece of trash.
We’d take some of her advertisers away, as we’ve done to Yorke, but she doesn’t have enough of a ratings impact to make her worthwhile.

“Glover is a racist piece of trash.”
Bobby, this new tough guy act has gone from amusing to stale real quick.

Dear Jd,
It’s not about tough. It’s about there are things that just won’t be put up with. Calling out a woman after she gets her leg broken is one of them.

Cianci should fill Rush’s spot making it truly local talk-radio. That’s what I would do anyway.
The tension between the four hosts will only make things better for the listener, unlike the tension in these comment pages which do nothing to enhance this blog, only weigh it down.

Rush is on the “back nine?”
On what golf course?
Ask Harry Reid if he thinks Rush has lost his influence . . .
Rush is as strong as ever, particularly as we enter a presidential election year.
‘PRO would be crazy to let him get away.
Buddy will be something like 10-12:00.
DePetro goes 7-10:00, Rush and Yorke stay where they are.

It sounds like Bobby Oliviera is hitting the sauce again. You remember those days, Bobby, when you’d routinely wise off and get your head smashed in because your physique can’t back up your mouth. Get off the blogs and get back to AA will you.

Dear Brian,
Those were cops (lol).
I’m good, but a lot of people are really unhappy on all sides of this deal. Don’t cry to me with the GOP loses more seats with this as the battle cry. (Then again, we’re almost at a point where that’s not possible)

I was sort of neutral about the idea of Cianci going back on the air to begin with. But a friend just pointed out a prospective major silver lining: Cianci will probably not be shy about bringing up any improper dealings in the Cicilline admin.

Now, I’m not faulting Helen for looking down upon immigrants (we can argue all day about what type of immigrants she’s talking about).
She’s a smart woman who knows how her bread is buttered. She’s giving her audience and her superiors what they want. The more liberal Howie Barte didn’t give the HJJ audience what it wanted, so he’s gone (as was Rudy Cheeks before him – the HJJ audience doesn’t want a liberal around, even when leavened with a conservative, as when Cheeks worked with John Hackett).
As someone of Helen’s military background might say, she saw the hill, and she took the hill.

I think Helen is awesome, but I don’t think she’s moving anywhere. Perhaps they should consider giving her a better timeslot though.
WPRO has a lot of moving parts: Yorke and Depetro aren’t exactly friends, and their current timeslots make it darn near impossible for them to bump into each other at the station. Cianci and Depetro are basically sworn enemies, too, so I would assume that they would not be placed in back to back timeslots. Yorke and Cianci basically get along, so I could imagine them having back to back shows. Cianci might also get the last morning slot, with Depetro and Ron getting their times adjusted a bit.
One thing that I think could happen, which would preserve all the current WPRO hosts, and retain Rush (he still gets the ratings), is that WPRO might drop the last hour of Rush’s show (which they are allowed to do), then give Cianci either a 2-4pm, with Yorke then from 4-7 OR Yorke from 2-5pm and Cianci from 5-7pm. Anyway you slice it, WPRO would be an even more dominant force than it already is. However, I do think there is a possibility one one of the hosts going over to WHJJ.

>retain Rush (he still gets the ratings)
Where are people getting this impression? His numbers aren’t so great.
Also, WPRO/Citadel stands to make a lot more money selling local ads during that time period than they would having to carry Rush’s cache of network spots from which they make nothing.
I say Rush is gone by the end of the year.

Wishing doesn’t make it so, Rhody. Name one instance when Helen has criticized either legal immigration or a legal immigrant.
And I’m still waiting for an answer to my first question: why is the US the only country not permitted to have borders?

“Who’s Making Way for Buddy?”
Another tid-bit to fuel all this rampant speculation:
This morning, commenting on the fact that a couple of his guests this week had been quite emotional (crying), Depetro went on to say that two other parties are crying now: the other station (WHJJ) and “someone in this building” (someone at WPRO).

That would be Yorke, Susan. Probably because he tore a lip muscle from trying to kiss Carcieri’s hindquarters.
Dan can always try to off Steve Kass to get the token talk radio alum job, though.

Gee, Rhody. You’d think in uber-blue state Rhode Island you guys would be able to find a radical leftie to offset everything that Yorke says.
I wonder why that’s not the case. Maybe the same reason that Air America is bleeding money? WHJJ’s Air America experiment will probably go down in history as ‘the beginning of the end’ of that station.

HJJ didn’t do Air America all the way. They did not run Randi Rhodes, by far their strongest show, live because they were still committed to Arlene. As for Franken, he’s a better writer and sketch comic than radio host.
The most successful liberal talkers (Ed Schultz, Stephanie Miller) were never part of AA.

You would think liberal Rhode Islanders, STARVING for liberal talk radio, would listen to what was available and push HJJ for more.

“HJJ didn’t do Air America all the way. They did not run Randi Rhodes, by far their strongest show, live because they were still committed to Arlene…”
The reason why the Soviet Union collapsed wasn’t because communism failed, it’s because it was never really tried, right?

Rhody,
How long have you had your severe hearing loss? lol Helen Glover has no issues or problems with immigrants in any way. None at all!
Only Cicilline and Mollis can even remotely come close to Gov. Carcieri in the number of shows and hours spent receiving criticism from Dan Yorke. That body part with Yorke’s lips firmly attached belongs to Patrick Lynch not Gov. Carcieri. The only time Danny disengages from Patrick’s bum is to lip-lock his brother Bill. The oft used term ‘double agent’ applies to Yorke. Ask the governor’s people about it sometime. They’re no fans of Yorke and neither is the governor. What the governor is a fan of is talk radio as a vehicle to speak directly to the masses. If Yorke were a newspaper columnist Carcieri might give him 5 minutes of his time. Might! It’s the forum not the host that draws the governor to talk radio.
Justin,
The quote from WPRO boss Paul Giammarco is very telling.
“Right now,” Giammarco said, “everyone is going to be here.”
Right now! Change will come. Trying to fit Buddy into the current line-up won’t work and Buddy didn’t sign up with WPRO so he could get up at 4 a.m. to co-host with St. Pierre.

Dear Susan,
On your David comment: from your lips to God’s ears.
By the way, the US should have borders. In this way, we could enhance our economic well being by directing were folks should go. However, the moment you find yourself in agreement with or even openly supporting Mr. Gorman and RILE, you have stepped over the racist line.
Greg,
Have you ever listened to Liberal talk radio?? It sucks. Talk radio is a conservative medium that a conservative audience listens to. It would be like a conservative version of the Indigo girls playing in a conservative coffee house. That doesn’t work either.
On our side, we’ve been hearing that Yorke’s timeslot is going to change to later. Yorke kisses Lynch’s ass to appear “neutral”. We don’t buy his act either.

Interesting note re: Yorke. You’ll soon hear Yorke (or his champions) tout his membership in Talkers magazine’s Hot 100 (check out its Web site) during discussions of how Buddy will enter the mienup.
Michael Harrison, the magazine’s publisher, is based in Springfield, Mass. Before coming to Providence, Yorke used to ply his trade in…Springfield, Mass.
