Got a Spare $30,000?

According to 630wpro.com, former US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will be in Rhode Island next week to headline a fundraiser to benefit the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Also mentioned as possibly being in attendance is our own Congressman, David Cicilline, along with co-sponsors Gina Raimondo and former Congressman Patrick Kennedy.
This sure sounds like one heckuva great night and could be fun for the whole family. I’m sure this will just lift the spirits of the middle class Rhode Islander that we hear David Cicilline working so hard for. So what exactly is the cost to attend such an event for us middle class, working Rhode Island folk?

The event with the former speaker is carrying a hefty price tag with attendees being asked to contribute at least $1,000 per person or as much as $30,800 a couple.

I’m not sure I even want to know what I’d get for more than $30,000 for the evening. I wonder if they’ll take a check.

How it will benefit you, or give value, is not the question. Think of all those custodial and catering jobs that will “created or saved”.
I think it is an open secret that contibuting $30,000 “puts you on the list”. Unless you are in a position where you might “need a favor”, or some “constituent service”, this is probably of small value.

Its always funny to me when either the left or the right decries the audacity of the other side to hold such pricey fundraisers… Both sides do it so what’s the point of the faux outrage?

These are politicians we’re talking about. They all do it. That doesn’t make it right. But, it also means that neither side is worse than the other in this regard.
Why $30,800? Probably because that’s the limit the FEC has imposed for an individual giving to a national party per calendar year.
See:
1.usa.gov/wHHCfL
(The article mentions $30,800 for a couple, though… perhaps a mistake in reporting? Or maybe they’re just applying this limit to couples at this event. The FEC does not appear to have any rules for couples.)
So, it might be more appropriate to talk about the $1000 minimum to attend, rather than the limit.
