Gov. Carcieri Calls for Sen. Alves to Resign the Finance Committee Chairmanship

Speaking this morning on the John DePetro Show, Governor Carcieri added his voice to Gio Cicione in calling for state Senator Stephen Alves to resign his Senate Finance Committee chairmanship while he remains under federal scrutiny.
Carcieri called for the state Ethics Commission — which he has strengthened — to take a harder line in policing potential conflicts of interest involving legislators.
Kudos to the gov. Now if only Murphy and Montalbano could see the light…
While I’m no fan of Alves, I don’t think it’s appropriate to call for his resignation “pending the investigation.”
He should either resign the chairmanship, or not.
The governor is absolutely right on. Alves sitting as chair of Senate finance as a federal probe is underway into his conduct in that very capacity is an absolute joke only to be outdone by the presence of Joe Montalbano as Senate President.
Both are under federal investigation. AR should conduct a poll among its’ readers and ask who will be the first to be indicted?
Btw also big kudos to the governor for taking Linc Chafee to the woodshed during the same show. The governor did not appreciate how Chafee was more than willing to take Republican support hard work and money for his Senate campaign and then turns around and ‘kicks dirt in the face’ of those same people by resigning from the party after he lost that campaign. The governor mentioned McCain, McConnell and Laura Bush as people who came here to raise money for Chafee and he turns around and betrays them. Based on the governor’s tone I don’t think he’ll be supporting Chafee for anything in the future and Linc should not hold his breath waiting on a dinner invite from the governor. Good for the governor! Chafee is a disgrace.

Ethical conduct. — The people of the state of Rhode Island believe that public officials and employees must adhere to the highest standards of ethical conduct,respect the public trust and the rights of all persons, be open, accountable and responsive, avoid the
appearance of impropriety and not use their position for private gain or advantage.
Such persons shall hold their positions during good behavior.

The real question is whether any member of the General Assembly has read that provision of the Constitution . . . or, for that matter, have the voters who elected them read it?
It’s academic. He’ll be indicted soon enough. Celona hasn’t been “back in town” for the last 2 months to enjoy the scenery.
