The Locus of Disruption
Andrew’s call in to the Matt Allen show, last night, turned into a longer form interview about the East Providence School Committee meeting. Stream by clicking here, or download it.
To the conversation about Anthony Carcieri’s microphone volume (or lack thereof), I’d add my impression that Carcieri fully anticipated a disruptive atmosphere and was focused on moving through the agenda, without expectation that the audience would be following along — or would be able to do so, given audience noise. Consequently, he didn’t bother much ensuring audibility beyond the dais.
That said, from my limited experience in Tiverton, the tone that the union set in East Providence was pretty standard for negotiation-season school committee meetings. The “can’t hear you” heckles are a mainstay — anything to rattle the small-time public officials.
Indeed, if you listen to the second snip of audio from the meeting, somebody shouted that very phrase — amid a drown-out wave of boos — almost before Carcieri’d said a single word.
What a world you live in! The union people were easy to spot. They wore black hats and Snidely Whiplash stirred them to a frenzy, and the good burghers of the town wore white hats while a chorus of angels sang hosannas in a futile attempt to soothe the savage beasts on the other side. Care for a game of CandyLand?

I think we all know who can play Grandma Nut….
And if a chorus of angels had started to sing, the union would have demanded that the school committee shut them down for making non-germane comments.
OTL,
I could easily detect who the union people were. I had t-shirts in support of the School Committee. Union folk assumed I was there giving out union NEARI shirts. They were like seagulls at the beach when one throws food around. It was really quite amusing.
The only chorus evident is comprised of sycophants, andrew, marc, and bobc. OldTimeLefty
Hmmm….maybe I was wrong…Gloppy the Molasses Monster may be a better fit….forever stuck.
On the Dan Yorke show today, with teacher-apologist Jim Hummell sitting in, Val Lawson justified the shouting down of taxpayer Tom Riley as he attempted to comment because “his information was wrong”. In her opinion. So if I and others believe that information in Val Lawson’s statement was wrong when she spoke in the public forum, she and the rest of her union would have been ok with me and others shouting her down as well? Oh wait, I mean trying to correct her with a point of order.
What a bunch of BS. Stupid hack.
The sound system is horrid at the high school. Couple that with union hacks behaving badly, and nobody gets to hear anything.
The buildings, and what is in them are in disrepair. The teacher complained about the lack of technology, and supplies, he is correct, the schools could be Amish with the little in there for the students. If all the money is going toward the adult entitlements, there is no money for anything else.
All one has to do is listen to the audio from the meeting to know what happened. Unfortunately, there were alot of outside agitators, who did more harm than good to the cause.
While watching the video of the SC meeting, I couldn’t help but notice two things. First, there was no one yelling at the student liaison to speak into the microphone even though her sound level was no different than Mr. Carcieri’s. Secondly, that same student liaison’s lower lip quivered while she tried to give her report.
I imagine the teachers were trying to show support for students (if only as a means of illustrating contrast to their disapproval of the school committee). Instead, they provided a wonderful illustration of the union mentality’s perversion of even their better impulses.
First, they booed when the student liaison entered the auditorium, probably because she came in with school officials and many in the crowd didn’t recognize her as a student.
Then, rather than polite clapping, they screamed and cheered as if she were giving a political speech.
When she finished and ran off the stage with her hand over her mouth, I heard some teachers around me snickering, “Now go run home.” That’s not meant to indicate the teachers disrespect for students; rather, it shows that they understood the environment that they were creating. Which means it was deliberate.
But OTL,
They like me, they really, really like me!
