Update to “E-Verify and Rhode Island’s General Officers”
Original post of the stances (or lack thereof) of RI’s General Officers on e-verify.
One of the many interesting details that Justin reported from the Operation Clean Government event this morning is a switch by General Treasurer Frank Caprio on the matter of e-verify. Treasurer Caprio has gone from Rorschach test (neutral) to supportive.
Pass e-Verify. We’re a country of laws, and we should enforce the laws.
Monique, I pointed this out to Justin on the way out of today’s very successful OCG breakfast.
Kudos be given to Caprio as he did not sputter or stutter when giving that answer. He was solid.
Now, Dennigan…blah, blah, Feds, blah, blah, blah
Those clowns at RI Future would crush Caprio for supporting our laws and the value of coming here legally and praise those like Roberts who wont enforce crime if the price tag isnt low enought.
Well, that’s another nail in the coffin for people like me supporting Frank Caprio.
He just keeps moving further and further to the right.
I don’t want another talk-radio-sound-byte Governor.

Now that your boy Cicilline has decided to try for 4 more years as Mayor,I guess you’re stuck with supporting Bob Walsh,who has as much chance of winning as Joe Trillo.(Although I’d vote for Trillo,I’m a realist.)
If respect for current law makes one a rightist,so be it.You are a lawyer-try to change the law if you want to,but don’t run people down for adhering to what is currently in effect.
Caprio seems to be fiscally responsible.
Patrick Lynch is a decent officeholder,but his area of expertise(law enforcement)isn’t the issue on the front burner in RI.The state isn’t overrun with criminality-it’s the economy which is at the heart of our problems(and every other state’s)so we need a competent financial professional in office.
Roberts hasn’t demonstrated any particular skills needed to be an effective governor.

From what starting point? If he was on the left already, and moves to the right, that makes him what, a centrist? It’s funny how it seems that what wins is usually a slightly more conservative view. I wouldn’t put Carcieri or Almond in the right-wing nut job conversation. So what’s that tell you about the voters of RI? We’re looking for someone who claims to be a fiscal conservative and isn’t in bed with the unions. I think that fits Caprio fairly well, and I’d give him a pretty big cushion in the polls right this minute. It’s very possible someone comes out of nowhere again, like Carcieri, but I think the job is Caprio’s to lose at this point.
I used to respect Caprio because he managed to win some concessions from his union people without having to foam at the mouth behind a micropphone like Carcieri does.
Now? Sounds like he’s running off at the mouth just like the governor (and hoping we don’t notice just ’cause he didn’t do it in the WPRO studio). Maybe he just keeps the “D” out of being a front-runner to maintain his association with the more powerful party.
The only way he loses the Dem primary, however, is if two attractive, charmismatic, well-funded GOP candidates emerge and wage a spirited primary campaign. Does anybody really think Trillo will stop GOP primary voters from crossing over?
Chafee looks better and more viable by the second.
