Automation is a threat and opportunity to which Rhode Island won’t respond.

Doing research for other purposes, I came across this map from a 2019 Brookings Institute report:

Brookings Institute U.S. map of automation potential by state, 2019

What this map shows for Rhode Island is a relatively high vulnerability of jobs in the Ocean State to AI and mechanical automation.  This indicates both a warning to our state’s workers and an opportunity for them and their employers.  Automation means productivity gains, which means more wealth flowing into Rhode Island.  That pale color across the rest of Southern New England and New York indicates that those states’ economies are already enjoying the economic benefits or have little opportunity to enjoy those that are now arriving.  Rhode Island, in contrast, can ride the wave for the benefit of all.

Unfortunately, because the people who run our state show no willingness or talent for figuring out how to create the conditions for the workers facing the threat, they’re most likely to prevent the opportunity from being realized instead.  In the long run, the threatened jobs will go away, anyway, and we’ll all be poorer.
