RE: The AG and the Tobacky

Surprise! After some weird deliberation, AG Lynch went ahead and signed the bond authorizing grabbing tobacco money as per the GA. He will supposedly elaborate at 4:30 today. Summary: much ado about nothing…except some PR, I guess.

So there was no problem after all? This incident reminds me of an SNL skit, with Lynch taking the Gilda Radner role.
Chevy Chase: Here with an editorial reply is Miss Emily Lattella.
Emily Lattella: What’s all this fuss I keep hearing about violins on television? Why don’t parents want their kids to see violins on television? I thought the Leonardo Bernstein concerts were just lovely, now, if they only show violins on television after ten o’clock at night, the little babies will all be asleep and they won’t learn any music appreciation. They’ll learn to play guitars, and bongo drums and go to Africa and join these rock’n roll outfits and they won’t drink milk! I think there should be more violins on television and less game shows, it’s terrible the way…
Chevy Chase: Um, Lattella, that’s Violence on television. Not violins.
Emily Lattella: Oh, well that’s different. Never mind!

I swear I saw a “little ball of sweat at the end of the AG’s nose…” I miss Gilda Radner.
I’ve hated this “tobacco money” from the get-go. As repulsive as I find cigarettes and the industry that pushes them, (reformed smoker, twenty-years) the stink of extortion cleverly dusguised as compensation fills the room whenever the subject is brought up. Personal responsibility? Not in this day and age. The states have set an ugly example by laying the blame of bad choices on somebody other than ourselves and then profiting from it. The logic behind the settlement is one of enablement. The whole thing is a farce, nobody made anybody smoke. Make the pile of money big enough and everybody gets on board and throws their scruples out the window.
