Hillary Campaign to Cicilline: Just Raise Taxes!

Because the Providence firefighters had promised to picket Senator Hillary Clinton’s Rhode Island event this weekend over their lack of a contract with the city, her campaign has asked Mayor David Cicilline not to attend the event.
But before dropping that bomb on His Honor, Hillary’s campaign suggested as an alternative that the Mayor of the capital city of the fourth highest taxed state simply give in to the firefighters’ demands.
My own view of the “dispute” between the Mayor and Local 799 is that it amounts to play-acting by David Cicilline, who believes that this stance will confer upon him the title “Champion of the Taxpayer”. He is mistaken. It is clear that Providence needs to make some adjustments to its budget. But such adjustments must be across the board. The Mayor has, instead, selected a very short list of line items to adjust. This is not only ineffectual but unfair. Further, if, as the Mayor contends, there is room to negotiate within the firefighters’ contract (which there may well be), then there is also room for negotiation in a city contract ten times larger – the teachers’ contract. The Mayor has not seen fit to look for such flexibility in the latter case, only in the former, which involves a far smaller block of municipal employees and, accordingly, a much smaller block of potential political supporters. For these reasons, it is difficult to be impressed by his production “starring” the firefighters.
At the same time, the philosophy espoused by Senator Clinton’s campaign – “just cave” – in addition to not being very sensitive to taxpayers, is the very one which has led to Rhode Island being the fourth highest taxed state in the country. Roland Benjamin has an excellent post today about the extravagant proposals Senator Obama has made while campaigning. Following upon the advice by the Hillary campaign to the Mayor of Providence, it appears that these two Presidential candidates are in a race to see who can spend down the taxpayer’s wallet the fastest, one with expensive proposals and the other with an irresponsible approach to the negotiation of government contracts.
You are on target as usual. He picks the smallest, and most historically anti-gay, union to go after. Meanwhile the teachers, police, Laborers, etc., etc. go right along with the usual mooching and lootings.
He’s being too clever by half and it will bite him-if he doesn’t wind up sitting in a federal court dock like his father, brother and “Uncle Joe” Bevilacqua.

Instead of using “But before dropping that bomb on His Honor, Hillary’s campaign suggested as an alternative that the Mayor of the capital city of the fourth highest taxed state simply give in to the firefighters’ demands.” which is using the State of Rhode Island overall general 50 state tax rating, why not use the City of Providence 50 state city tax friendly rating produced by CNN Money and the government of the District of Columbia. estimates based on 2005 data.
City of Providence Rhode Island is ranked as the third least tax friendly city in the nation with 11.10% taxes based on estimated burden of major taxes for a family of three making $100,000.

There are no such thing as “firefighter demands.” Everything in our contract is negotiable. Everything. The only demands concerning the contract have come from the city administration.
Cicilline’s words, “cave in” to the “firefighters demands” are simply not true. I doubt if the Hillary people would be so naive to say something so provocative at this stage of the campaign.
Our only recourse during this contract debacle has been neutral arbitration with an out of state arbitrater. When presented with the facts the arbitrator has ruled in favor of the firefighters union. Every time.
Sooner or later the gig will be up in what they call Providence. Providence is BANKRUPT! That’s right, people, only the cowards in this state, namely Auditor General Ernie Almonte, have no b*lls to tell the truth about the depth of the problems. The fact is that within a couple of years, the truth will come out when checks to retirees start to bounce. The unfunded liability is going to overwhelm the city to the point where they simply will not be able to pay what has been promised. Just watch!
While campaigning for his FIRST term, little David promised the firefighters that together, they would settle all contract issues within 1 year.
Today little David announces his intention to run for a THIRD term.
He’s been lying since Day 1. And yet the limousine liberals on the East Side and the “protected classes” everywhere else just lap it up, because by God, little David is a DEMOCRAT.
Maybe enough East Side moneybags got stiffed by Madoff to hurt the campaign of the little scumbag.
The only good thing about this evil, corrupt, perverted freak winning would be how much it would piss off the spoiled little princes-the firemen-RI’s royalty.
