Candidate Update
This may have to become a daily feature for the next few days…
Ken Block will be the Moderate candidate for Governor (according to Katherine Gregg of the Projo). Is this because no one else was interested, or because no one wants to give the Moderate party any money and by becoming a candidate, Mr. Block can spend his own? Also, Robert Corrente is the new Moderate Party chair.
Also from Katherine Gregg, Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts and Secretary of State Ralph Mollis are out of the 1st District Congressional race. This is an important development, in that Lt. Gov. Roberts would seem to have a good shot in a Democratic primary, with David Cicilline’s problems with unions and William Lynch not fully trusted by progressives. But then again, we are yet to hear any specific examples of where Mr. Lynch disagrees with the “extreme left”.
Myrth York is considering a run for Mayor of Providence (according to Ian Donnis of WRNI). No word yet from Bruce Sundlun or Lincoln Almond.
Re: Moderate Party: My guess is A and B
Re: Roberts and Mollis: Ugh and Ugh.
Re: York: Ugh.
That is about as much commentary as I can muster for the evening.
I wish Liz would run for Congress. That’d open up the seat and possibly give Bob Healey more of a platform. If his one-issue platform is ever going to work, it probably would have been now.
Healey for no Lt Governor ’10!!
Bill Lynch certainly stabbed Liz Roberts in the back with his courtship of Jeremy Kapstein to run for LG. Having married into McDonald’s money, Kapstein can certainly afford to fund his own campaign if he runs for anything.
I’ve never heard of Donna Nesselbush before today, but she’s in a great position if Roberts, York and Paiva-Weed are all passing on this race. Her lack of notoriety compared to Lynch and Cicciline may be a good thing in this political climate.
Does Ken Block get 5 percent? I’m not convinced.
Oh no, not Elizabeth Roberts. She reminds me of someone who, sadly, can’t take repeated hints that she long ago overstayed her welcome and yet won’t go away.
I’m reminded of the time on a July 4 weekend when she had a Nat’l Guard Apache helicopter fly her to the Bristol parade (if my memory serves me correctly). When asked to justify the $5,000-10,000 cost per hour of flight time, she made up a very poor and untruthful excuse that it was some kind of “training” flight. And this wasn’t that long after former Mass. Governor Jane Swift got caught improperly using helicopters to fly to her home in western Massachusetts — that was the beginning of the end for Jane Swift. How stupid and dishonest can Roberts be to do this sort of thing? What a moron, even by the uniquely low RI standards.
Myrth York for Mayor of Providence? She could probably buy the election, but why on earth would she want to be Mayor? With all of her inherited money, has she no better ideas for putting that money to work? Answer: no, because anyone who is so unimaginative to want to sit through all of those awful late-night Providence zoning board meetings, and to make all of the lousy zoning decisions that she did to boot, is by definition clueless and very lost.
But the thought of having anyone but Cicilline as Mayor is so awesome that I’d almost vote for York, even if she didn’t pay me to do so. But vote for her only if she promisies not to hire any of Cicilline’s current department heads — most of whom probably should be in prison.
And query, will York again accuse Governor Carceiri of having killed young children when he was CEO of Cookson? Answer: no, because she’ll have a different opponent, but she’ll probably do something just as stupid to ensure another expensive campaign loss.
We don’t need another East Sider like Mrs.Doubtfire, that’s for sure.
I read that Sen.Pichardo might run.Good,if it gets him out of the Senate.Sanctuary City if he ever won.
He’ll probably court the votes of illegal aliens and resident aliens-what the hell, there’s no means to check on such things.
I hope Michael Solomon runs. He’s my councilman and he’s a successful businessman. He is also a very accesible politician who seems really interested in the practical problems of cities.
I have no clue if he is liberal or conservative-at the city level, competency is the most importnt thing. And honesty.
Any of the aforementioned are more honest than Cicilline. For that matter so are half the inmates at the ACI.
One important issue in Providence is the absolute need to get rid of Chief “Shiny Badge”Esserman.
York and Pichardo are very suspect in this area.
“I read that Sen. Pichardo might run”
Well, that’d be bad news for New York System in Olneyville. At leas then when some drunk is banging at their door after closing time yelling “Do you know who I am?!?”, then they’ll at least have to say “Yes Mayor, but we’re still closed.”
Anybody who couldn’t see this coming – Block as the Moderate party candidate for Governor – has no political sense. I predicted exactly this in some earlier post, calling it the Block Party. This guy and his intentions are way too predicatable. Here is another prediction, his candidacy is going nowhere. The guy has a Napoleon complex. He’s rude and obnoxious and it’ll be fun watching it all unfold.
Regarding this and most all other elections here,I can’t help thinking about a riff on a 60’s anti war “saying”
“What if they gave a war and nobody came?”
Well, how much I wish that we could have an election in which nobody came to show our utter rejection of the candidates who we don’t feel truly represent us,but we have no choices
except for them.
