Jobs Americans Won’t Take?
This little blurb stuck out as I sifted through the newspaper, the other day. Why should this be so:
Despite high unemployment in Connecticut, Census jobs are going begging.
The Hartford office of the U.S. Census Bureau is struggling to fill between 1,000 and 1,500 temporary jobs that pay $15 to $22.75 an hour.
More than 4,200 have applied for the jobs, but the census office needs to recruit more by April 27 because most will drop out or never show up for the jobs.
Are people becoming used to idleness and dependency, or is something else going on here?
In addition, 43 percent of applicants won’t even make the list of those eligible to be hired.
“They’ll fail a written”
Blame this on unionists. Those libatrds must be taken to the woodshed and beaten with wet rags. Those deceitful liberals and cross dressing whack jobs that proliferate college campus’s all over this once great nation are the problem with todays culture. Pot smoking panty wearing metro sexual sissy dancer nancy boys are destroying our nation. When I was a young man I worked ten hours a day stringing dead pogies down on the dock. The smell was rotten, a horrific mix old pogie and several \
week old maggoty skate. It was rancid and reminds me of some of the libs that I work with. Worked my way all the way up to 2nd deckhand/cook before retiring to join the Marines and then become a non-union ironworker. I am the American dream and I did on my own without some union layabouts to clear the path for me.
I just don’t get it. I have a former diamond setter and a former toolmaker working for me now. Painting and general carpentry. I am paying less than the census bureau, and they are OK guys. The best part is that you can talk to them in a way you can’t talk to carpenters. If you say “that door is 70/1000ths off”, you don’t hear “no one will notice a 1/16th of an inch”. They are used to the idea that 10/1000ths off, and you start all over again.
My real point is that these are decent, smart, guys. And, they want to work. There is something very wrong in the census story. In truth, I don’t see either of these guys wanting to do census work. They grew up in manufacturing, “filling out forms” isn’t “work”. The toolmaker is going to pull down and rebuild my South Bend lathe (made in USA and I’m proud of it, the name was just re-introduced and it is now Asian). Guys like this don’t grow on trees, I can’t believe that there isn’t a place for them. Probably too close to “red neck” myself.
A lot of people collecting unemployment. This might mess that up.
Unlike Rhode Island, maybe the white-collar unemployed of Connecticut consider themselves too upscale to hit the streets of an inner city (I lived west of Hartford for awhile, and most of those folks sincerely believe their s–t don’t stink). I know Rhode Island had no trouble filling those jobs.
My compliments to Willie for spinning some great social satire above. Had me ROFL.
I need work, but when the choice is to support the Administration’s corrupt abuse of the census, I have to go John Galt.
It does seem reasonable that the availability of unemployment benefits would tend to make people more selective. There is nothing uncommon about receiving those benefits and working “under the table”, this makes you as well off as you were at your regular employment. This is particularly common with tradespeople.
Sounds cruel, but there is no better way to get people back to work than to stop extending unemployment benefits. I’ve lived through several recessions and never collected. When I lost a job, I just went and got another one.
Let’s say it clearly…there are many many many many many many jobs which white, black and other folks who have been here for many generations will not take. Those include chicken plucking, beef slaughter, cleaning restrooms at highway rest stops and hundreds of other jobs.
It is the American way to assume that since you have been here a couple generation, you don’t have to dirty your little hands any longer.
As to doing away with unemployment…..and therefore making people get jobs – STUPID. First of all, it assumes (right wing drivel here) that people don’t want to work. They do! You want proof….OK, then tell me quickly why we had virtually NO unemployment when the jobs picture was good? Oh, you can’t….I get it!
Also, people PAID INTO unemployment – that is what a raining day fund is all about – it rains sometime.
It’s high time for right wingers to actually think things through a little bit, as opposed to bending every news story to fit their already hardened (and wrong) views.
