Tasting the New Environment

I just heard on WPRO that the judge won’t decide whether to stop the East Providence School Committee’s unilateral employment change until the 23rd. It looks like union members will start to feel the pinch of not giving concessions.
That’s a huge change for the better from an environment in which they expect to get back pay no matter how long they hold out.

At the E.P. city council meeting last night, Mayor Larisa mentioned to the teachers and others, that if they had agreed to a graduated phase in of cost-sharing which he had backed four years ago (like 5% in year one, %10 in year two, and 15% in year three), that a sudden 20% co-pay would not seem so dramatic. They’ve paid 0%, 0%, and 0%, and now, they will be made to pay at least 20%. The chickens have come home to roost.
