Who Said Republicans Aren’t Fun?

As we old folks get our act together, on the political scene, we should ensure that there’s a continuity stretching down to our younger right-of-center compatriots. So, if you can put down that new book about Reagan and Buckley for a couple of hours on Thursday night, you might consider joining me here:

Join us at McFadden’s, at 52 Pine Street, in Downtown Providence next Thursday night, January 22nd, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, for our 2009 Kickoff Event.
McFadden’s is providing us with free appetizers and drink specials. All we have to do is show up and make fun of Democrats for a couple hours.

How is 2 hours enough to make fun of Democrats?

“show up and make fun of Democrats for a couple hours.”
“How is 2 hours enough to make fun of Democrats?”
Charming. Glad to see that the Republican “big tent” is still open.
And please don’t talk to me about “having a sense of humor” about this. The anger and bitterness on this blog (commenters at least, if not administrators-Pitcher is a case in point) totally undercuts any such appeal.
Don’t get me wrong. I would like the RI-GOP to become more successful in electing officials and agree fully that one-party rule is a bad thing. I would like to find common ground on many subjects.
This is not the way to achieve it.

Thomas,
Aren’t you just a little full of yourself? The only anger and bitterness that I see here, appears to be coming from you. The “making fun” comment and the like aren’t meant to be taken so seriously, so loosen the tie a bit. Geesh.
PS You’d be taken more seriously, if your negative comments weren’t solely limited to this blog, which does it’s best to stay issues-oriented.

Anything that gets conservatives to lighten up a bit is fine with me (and probably helps the cause politically, too).
They’re human, Thomas – they’re not all whining about abortion and gay marriage. I think both parties have learned by now thatbeing whiny loses votes.

Heh, looks like Professor Schmeling has it out for me.
I just don’t understand why someone would continue to frequent a blog filled with such hate from the posters and the commenters and also to a place that often feels like he’s “slumming” it, to use a term he chose.
I’d think if I didn’t like a blog or the commenters, I’d simply stop visiting. But hey, if Prof Tom stops adding his comments, then I guess it just becomes a kumbaya festival, no?

Will,
You say, “The anger and bitterness is coming from you”…..”this blog, which does it’s best to stay issues-oriented”.
You’re kidding, right? Look for the number of times that commenters here call other people “thugs” “whores” “pimps” and so on. That’s “issues oriented”? I think not. Then, if you want to prove your point about me, please find one instance where I engaged in such derisive name-calling. I’m confident you won’t be able to.
Pitcher- I don’t “have it in for you”. I just find your anonymous ad hominems to be a great example of what this blog would be better off without.
Again, if the RI-GOP found a way to gain at least a significant opposition force in the G.A. I think it would be very good for our state. Really. Seriously. But you’re not on track to achieve that.
A gathering to “make fun of Demos” is childish, and not funny in the light of the really mean-spirited comments prevalent here. It’s certainly not the way to do accomplish the goal of advancing your cause.
But, if that’s how you want to proceed…have fun.

Pitcher,
It might be fun. There are a few things I’d like to make fun about the Dems for too.
But does that mean I get to learn who you really are?
And do I have to swear to secrecy about your identity, even as you continue to insult me, personally and professionally in this forum?
I’m not sure that’s worth it…unless it’s really, really good beer.

John Silber is a Democrat.
Toby Keith is a Democrat.
Rubbers Ruggerio is a Democrat.
I’m all for making as much fun of those guys as humanly possible.

It’s McFaddens! How can it be bad beer?
Tom, if it makes you feel better, I’d even swing by your office and say hello.
It’s sad, but some people work in RI where they actually do get fired for even having a conservative opinion. I gotta pay the bills and feed the family. Things like that can lead to people being a little cranky against the left.
But we find ways to deal, like anonymously blasting away on message boards while actually making reasonable posts the other 90% of the time.

Pitcher,
Feel free to drop my office, I’ll be happy to buy you a cup of coffee in the cafeteria. (warning…it’s not good coffee!). But I recommend that you call ahead, since when I’m not in class I’m usually preparing class, in committee meetings, doing administrative work, holding office hours, grading papers, and so on.
However, I hope that during your visit you’ll refrain from baselessly insulting Rhode Island College as you have previously done.
I’m not quite buying the “getting fired for having a conservative opinion” thing. Where do you work that they would do such a thing? If it happens, however, I’ll happily join the protest against it. Nobody should be fired for their political opinions.
Of course the opinions have to be within certain bounds. Even with tenure, I can get fired for making inflammatory and threatening statements. That’s why I prefer to post under my real name. It keeps me honest and, I feel that, if I remain honest and reasonable, I have no fear of unjust recriminations.

I like to use my real name because I don’t work for anyone and I could shit care less what people think of me or my opinions-I have no plans to run for office or otherwise garner public support.I also have strong opinions and think I would be dishonest to use a screen name-however I do realize that people can be harrassed or fired for being conservative or liberal, depending on who you work for.Posting on a blog shouldn’t cost anyone their livliehood.
I attended a few Drinking liberally events and have to say that some people I often disagree with on line like Pat Crowley and Matt Jerzyk were very courteous and we had some decent debates(no one’s mind got changed)-it is interesting to actually meet people you exchange thoughts with on line.
Thom-I certainly don’t devalue RIC-my daughter got her BS and MS in Special Education there and her education in those fields at RIC was first rate. She spent 9 successful years teaching in Providence public schools and now teaches at a university out of state while pursuing her Doctorate on a fellowship.
I am sure if you showed up,you would be pleasantly surprised.
I vote for some Democrats(Caprio is my favorite for Governor)so i would hardly make fun of them as a group.I know of some Republicans like Lila Sapinsley that I wouldn’t piss on if they were on fire.

Thomas,
All I am suggesting is that maybe, just maybe, it would help liberals a bit to not fit so neatly into tired stereotypes of beady-eyed intelligentsia wearing old tweed suits, coming out of their ivy towers everyone once in a while, to come down to “our level” to speak wisdom unto us.
Blogs are about discussion of points of view. Sometimes that is done with similes, metaphors, and the like. This isn’t a newspaper. It’s a little better actually, because you can’t interact with a newspaper. It’s a back and forth ongoing conversation. Conversation isn’t always civil, although I know that Justin and the gang try their best to promote civility (unlike that other blog).
PS For the humor-impaired, I am joking about the tweed.

I ask you is there anything more hilarious than lefty wingnuts suddenly playing the patriotism card? The unity card? The flow of inaugural blather coming from the left has had me laughing and laughing hard since yesterday. Very funny stuff!!
The fun for fun Republicans had just begun.
Thomas, you take yourself far too seriously. Typical liberal!! Lighten up Tommy and learn to enjoy family, God and country. (Psssst, just don’t tell anyone at RIC that’s how you’re feeling Tom. Then again your newly discovered happy disposition will give you away and you’ll be removed from the RIC faculty for not practicing that old stale liberal group think)
You’ll be a much more fun and happy person if you follow the ‘right’ way Thomas.

>>I know of some Republicans like Lila Sapinsley that I wouldn’t piss on if they were on fire.>>
Mitch McConnell’s on that list for me. The guy went through the last 8 years spending like a drunken sailor, getting every last bike path and library named after him in Kentucky named after him due to the funding he brought home for these projects, but now that he’s no longer in power, he’s “disgusted” with how the Dems want to spend the stimulus package and he vows to rein in spending. Oh really Mitch?
And I gotta think there was a fair bit of rejoicing in the Bernstein household yesterday when Ramos and Compean had their sentences commuted yesterday.

Compean and Ramos should have been pardoned, not commuted. What htey did was worth a suspension, not even being fired.
Bush did this grudgingly. However I am glad they aere getting out of an unjust sentence resulting from an unjust conviction.I cannot imagine any Border Patrolman or ICE agent “going the extra mile”to get the job done under this administration.
Mitch McConnell-what a walking turd pile!Don’t forgot he had his wife made Secretary of Labor. No influence peddling there!

Touche, Monique. Maybe I was easy on him because he’s the impetus that finally lured my wife out to vote (against him, of course).

Joe said,
“I am sure if you showed up,you would be pleasantly surprised.”
I dunno, Joe. I’d like to believe you, but are you really saying that people who routinely call those they disagree with “pigs”, “thugs”, “pimps” “whores” and ” beady-eyed intelligentsia” are really pleasant folks to get together and have a beer with?
Even if they are “just joking”?
I think you’ll understand why I am skeptical, and why I’m giving tonight a pass.

If anyone is still reading:
I woke this morning with the realization that my comment above painted with too wide a brush and was unfair. I apologize.
I have apparently let this issue get far too far under my skin, and I’m becoming a troll myself, which is not my desire.
I hope you all had an enjoyable evening out.
