It Might Be Better to Face the Swine

Folks might want to consider this before signing up for inoculation:

A warning that the new swine flu jab is linked to a deadly nerve disease has been sent by the Government to senior neurologists in a confidential letter.
The letter from the Health Protection Agency, the official body that oversees public health, has been leaked to The Mail on Sunday, leading to demands to know why the information has not been given to the public before the vaccination of millions of people, including children, begins.
It tells the neurologists that they must be alert for an increase in a brain disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which could be triggered by the vaccine.
GBS attacks the lining of the nerves, causing paralysis and inability to breathe, and can be fatal.

There’s a whole lot of context that one requires from a doctor before issuing a notice of avoidance, but still…

It refers to the use of a similar swine flu vaccine in the United States in 1976 when:

  • More people died from the vaccination than from swine flu.
  • 500 cases of GBS were detected.
  • The vaccine may have increased the risk of contracting GBS by eight times.
  • The vaccine was withdrawn after just ten weeks when the link with GBS became clear.
  • The US Government was forced to pay out millions of dollars to those affected.

Due to not having a spleen thanks to agent orange,I have to take a pneumovax shot every five years.Normal people only need it every ten years, and it is a lifesaver because it virtually completely protects against pneumococcal pneumonia, the main killer compliction of the flu.
the shot is extremely safe and there is seldom even a localized reaction(i.e. sore arm),so this is a good alternative if one is fearful of the flu shot.

The more people who are immunized the better. You Justin as a young healthy person may not have much to fear from contracting this flu but it may mean death for others. The more people who do not help spread this disease the less likely that those with existing health problems do not contract it. From a public health perpective it would seem to be a responsible thing to do but each person needs to make that decision. By the way I do not wish to suggest that someone who rather not recieve a flu vaccine is a less responsible person for coming to that decision. At the very least though I would suggest that people who are sick limit their interactions with others.
