U.S. Grant and the Left-Right Lines

Two lines of debate in the battle of Left versus Right cross frequently.
One is the question of whether history has an inexorable pull toward which it progresses, making it possible for there to be a “right side” of history that one can predict beforehand for a given issue.  The other is whether one’s side on the issues of the day offers a direct parallel to the sides that one would have taken having born at another period in history.

Married, single, wife, wifeless, children, childless, Jesus’ message of universal love is absolutely unaffected. It is an important question to those who interpret Jesus’ mission for all of us so that we may believe as they deign to tell us. It matters only to those who want to interpose themselves between us and him and interpret his mission for us.

OTL, it is rare that I agree with you, but this is one of those times.
I think it is only important in the Catholic faith. For about 1000 years, Latin Rite Catholics have maintained that a life of celibacy among the priests is Christ like (the 11th century rules are sometimes said to only re-enforce earlier beliefs). Eastern Rite Catholics are not so adamant. There is nothing fundamental to that faith which requires such celibacy.
